<p>A gearbox assembly for use in an electric power assisted steering system comprising a housing (1), an input shaft (15) located at least partially within the housing (1) which carries a worm gear (3) and includes means for coupling (14) to a motor rotor at one end; an output shaft located at least partially within the housing which carries a wheel gear (2); a first bearing assembly (4) which supports the input shaft at a side of the worm distal from the end of the shaft (15) which connects to the motor rotor and second bearing assembly (5) which supports the input shaft (15) at the other side of the worm (3); and an adjustable bearing support means (7) which is secured to the housing in such a manner that it can be rotated about an axis of rotation, the first bearing assembly (4) being mounted on the support means in a position that is eccentric to the axis of rotation such that upon rotation of the support means (7) the first bearing assembly (4) is displaced relative to the wheel gear, in which the support means (7) comprises a sleeve that is located within a recess and which is free to rotate about its axis within the recess, in which the sleeve is provided with at least one set of teeth (7a) spaced at least partially around its circumference and the assembly further includes an adjuster screw or bolt (6) which passes through an opening (13) that is fixed relative to the housing, the adjuster screw or bolt (7) having a thread which engages with the set of teeth such that rotation of the screw causes the sleeve to rotate relative to the housing (1).</p> |
