Disclosed is a substantially purified or isolated nucleic acid fragment encoding a Homeo-box protein (HB) from a Lolium species or a functionally active fragment or variant thereof. The nucleic acid can be introduced into a plant to modify plant life cycles and/or growth phases, flowering processes, flowering and/or plant architecture and flower and/or inflorescence development in a plant, or can be used as a molecular marker.
