A method (and system for removing hydrogen sulfide from gaseous process streams, such as sour gas istreams are disclosed and described. A gaseous stream (50) containing hydrogen sulfide ean be contacted with an aqueous silicon-containing composition under high shear conditions t ' o form a sweetened gaseous product (130). The gaseous product has significantly redubed hydrogen sulfide content and recovered liquid and solid filtrates are generally non-toxic.
