A display device for displaying a screen with optimized sharpness, and a method thereof are provided to accentuate sharpness clearly while not generating noise and prevent shooting generated unnecessarily when accentuating the sharpness. A method for controlling a display device for displaying a screen with optimized sharpness comprises the following steps of: receiving video data; calculating a variation of the Y signal level value of each cell composing the received video data(S1001); and determining a degree of weight of the varied Y signal level value in proportion to the calculated variation of the Y signal level value of each cell in a filtering process of adjusting sharpness of the received video data(S1004~S1008).
