A backlight unit and an LCD including the same are provided to allow a lamp to start emitting light immediately when power is applied to the lamp by increasing activity of a gas filled in the lamp by supplying light to the lamp for a predetermined time before power supply. A lower case(50) is placed under a lamp(60), and includes a hole(70) at a location corresponding to the lamp. A cylindrical light condensing guide(80) is coupled to the hole. A light emitting diode(90) is placed under the light condensing guide. The lamp is a fluorescent lamp. The light condensing guide has a through hole therein, and a diameter of a portion of the through hole adjacent to the lamp is smaller than a diameter of a portion of the through hole adjacent to the light emitting diode.
