Improved particles of anion-exchange resins derived from aminated, haloalkylated, crosslinked polymers of aromatic hydrocarbons, are obtained by treating the intermediate haloalkylated product with a liquid, organic, decomposing agent that diffuses into the polymer and decomposes the complex of Friedel-Crafts catalyst/haloalkylating agent which is formed during the haloalkylation and is contained in the intermediate product. Preferably the intermediate is separated from the reaction mixture before adding the decomposing agent. If desired amination may be effected in the presence of the liquid used as decomposing agent. Liquid decomposing agents specified are methanol, ethanol, acetone, ethyl methyl ketone, dioxan, tetrahydrofuran, dimethyl formamide and cyclohexanone. In the example a styrene/ethylene dimethacrylate polymer in the form of spherical particles, is haloalkylated with chloromethyl or bromomethyl ether in the presence of ethylene dichloride and aluminium chloride as catalyst. Prior to amination the separated beads of haloalkylated product are treated with acetone. |
