The present invention relates to an apparatus, comprising a frame (10), a stationary part (18) mounted on the frame, one or more main segments (26) arranged rotatably relative to the frame, each comprising at least one arm and a gondola arranged on the arm (28) for the purpose of moving people round in circles therein, drive means for driving the main segment rotatably relative to the stationary part, and an intermediate segment (24) arranged between the stationary part and the rotatable main segment, wherein the intermediate segment can be coupled selectively to the stationary part and the rotatable main segment by means of coupling means. The invention also relates to a method for embarking persons into and disembarking persons from a ferris wheel.
