PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hair dye composition which can dye the hair in a hue which is vivid just after dyeing and changes little with the lapse of time after dyeing, remaining nearly equivalent to the hue just after dyeing for a long time and to provide a hair dyeing method using the same. SOLUTION: Provided is a hair dye composition comprising the following components (A) to (C) in a mass ratio (A)/[(B)+(C)] of 0.001-1,000: (A) a dissociable direct dye represented by formula (1): X-N=N-Y (wherein X and Y are each a group, except a carboxy group, a sulfo group, and a quaternary ammonium group, bonded to the azo group through a carbon atom, provided that X is an optionally substituted heterocyclic or aromatic group, and Y is an optionally substituted dissociable-proton-containing heterocyclic or aromatic group or an alkyl group), (B) a paraphenylenediamine derivative as a precursor, and (C) a metaaminophenol derivative or a metaphenylenediamine derivative as a coupler.
