A system for converting universal media and a media conversion method using the same are provided to convert a media file so as to guarantee playback irrespective of a mode, decoding performance, and display resolution of a player by using a model number of the player. A remote player(110) database stores attribute information for media players. A UC(Universal Conversion) server(120) transmits a player database to a client terminal according to a request of a client terminal. A media converter(130) is installed to the client terminal and converts the media file based on the media player attribute information extracted from the remote player database received from the UC server and a local player database stored in the client terminal by unique information of the media player. The media converter synchronizes the remote player database with the local player database. The media player attribute information includes at least one of a capacity of a storing part of the media player, the display resolution, media file decoding performance, and an available codec. The unique information of the media player is at least one of a serial and model number of the media player.
