PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology enabling more precisely detecting failure of a PM trapper. SOLUTION: A failure detection system comprises a differential pressure sensor 20 for detecting a differential pressure between before and after of the PM trapper 11 and detects failure of the PM trapper based on a variation of the differential pressure between before and after of the PM trapper 11 in such two different operation states of the internal combustion engine 1 that the atmospheric temperature of the differential pressure sensor 20 falls in a predetermined temperature range. Variation of an offset error of the differential pressure sensor 20 is inhibited from being caused by variation of the atmosphere temperature of the differential pressure sensor 20. The variation of the differential pressure between before and after of the PM trapper 11 can be therefore accurately detected and failure of the PM trapper can be more accurately detected.
