The device has a housing with a photo sensor (24) extending linearly, and an evaluation unit comparing a position of a light, which is produced from a marking laser, in the photo sensor with a reference position. A signal is produced with a deviation of a measured position from the reference position. The evaluation unit forms a spatial average value of the sensor signal. The evaluation unit is connected by an interface with a central data processing.
