PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device designed such that replacement of at least light modulation devices is further facilitated and adjustment is further facilitated by having a fixing structure for the optical adjustment device, which eliminates the need for replacement involving a color synthesizing optical device, and to provide a projector having the optical device. SOLUTION: The optical device 1 includes the light modulation devices 110 (light valves 71) and the color synthesizing optical device 80 (cross dichroic prism 81). Each light modulation device 110 is integrally formed, as a light modulation device unit 100, from a flat square transparent substrate 130 and a light modulation device fixing part 120 fixed to the edge area of the substrate 130 and fixing the light modulation device 110. The light modulation devices 110 are fixed to the luminous flux incident end faces 81R, 81g and 81B of the light synthesizing optical device 80 facing light modulation devices 110. Each light modulation device 110 has a substrate fixing part 200 for holding and fixing detachably the substrate 130 composing the optical modulation device unit 100. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
