PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving a plasma display panel to avoid erroneous discharge that may occur in an addressing period for selective discharge. SOLUTION: The method for driving a plasma display panel is characterized in that the display period for one field of picture signals of a plasma display panel is composed of a plurality of sub-fields and that prior to an address period of the top sub-field in the display period of one field, a reset period is provided to perform gradation display. The method includes: a detection step of detecting a loaded state of light emission in the plasma display panel according to the picture signal in the one preceding field; and a first step of applying pulses in a first polarity to a first row electrode in the reset period, where the applied voltage of the pulses increases with time to reach a predetermined attained potential.
