The method involves controlling a rotor (5) of a centrifuge (6) with a voltage or frequency characteristic controller (29) by a frequency converter by using a three phase asynchronous motor (1), where the voltage or frequency characteristic controller is subordinated by a control loop. The control loop supplies an actual current from a current source of the frequency converter. A probe is arranged in the rotor of the centrifuge, and is positioned in a predetermined probe processing position. An independent claim is also included for a centrifuge with a device for positioning a rotor in a predetermined idle position.
