A mobile terminal having a message reading control function and a method thereof are provided to protect personal information by making hidden messages displayed only to a user who passes user authentication. A mobile terminal(100) having a message reading control function comprises a message management part(110), a hiding function setup part(130), a user authentication part(120), and a message filtering part(140). The message management part(110) manages received messages, and stores predetermined number information established by the user. If a message is received, the hiding function setup part(130) confirms whether the calling number of the received message is matched with the number information stored in the message management part(110). If matched, the hiding function setup part(130) sets the received message as hiding. The user authentication part(120) authenticates the user of the mobile terminal(100). The message filtering part(140) executes a control operation so that the hidden message can be displayed to a user authenticated through a fingerprint identification part.
