<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus where the retainment and insertion of foreign matter can be effectively eliminated, and to provide a method for controlling the image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus comprises a cleaning means where the reverse rotation operation and normal rotation operation of an image carrier (photoreceptor drum) are performed in accordance with the rotating speed of the image carrier, to suppress the insertion of foreign matter.
