PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pay-in bill handling mechanism capable of detecting, during the delivery of bills, a permanently deformed bill which is considered to be not suitable for being taken in a device during paying in. SOLUTION: This pay-in bill handling mechanism has an input/output port for accepting bill P and a pay-out roller 15 for delivering the bill P from the input/output port by normal rotation and returning the bill P to the input/output port P by reverse rotation. Projection parts 23 projecting from conveying surfaces 19a, 19b are formed on the conveying surfaces 19a, 19b on the downstream side of a pair of conveying guide 18 for guiding the bill P payed out from the input/output port 2 and the pay-out roller 15 of the conveying guide 18 between the conveying surfaces 19a, 19b facing each other. An arrival detection sensor 26 for detecting the front end of the bill conveyed to a distance at which the rear end of the bill P payed out by the pay-out roller 15 is positioned at the input/output port 2 is installed on the downstream side of the projection parts.
