<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a toroidal continuously variable transmission suitable for miniaturization, while preventing a shortage of lubricating oil in a lubricating object part with a simple and inexpensive constitution. <P>SOLUTION: This toroidal continuously variable transmission can soak the lubricating object part such as a traction surface in gathered lubrication oil, by putting a casing in an oil tub state by the circulating lubricating oil, by checking intrusion of the lubricating oil into an oil tank 200, by closing an opening part of the oil tank 200, when stopping driving of the transmission, by opening and closing the opening part of the oil tank 200 for storing the lubricating oil circulated to the lubricating object part by opening-closing doors 205 and 205. In this case, an oil level 210 of the lubricating oil is desirably positioned on the upper side than the lubricating object part so that the lubricating object part such as the traction surface is sufficiently soaked.
