PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ignition device for an internal combustion engine capable of improving startability by finely controlling ignition position at a time of start of the engine. SOLUTION: Time from generation of reference signal by a signal generator 2 to generation of fixed ignition position signal is measured as cranking speed judgment period of time Tx. When the measured judgment period of time is a first established period of time T1 or less and cranking speed is sufficiently high, ignition signal is immediately given to an ignition circuit 1. When the measured judgment period of time exceeds the first established period of time T1 and is a second established period of time T2 or less and cranking speed is not sufficient but start is possible by retarding ignition position, ignition signal is generated at crank angle position retarded from the fixed ignition position by retarded angles which is operated as a function of the judgment period of time Tx and gets larger value as the judgment period of time Tx is longer.
