USER INTERFACE FOR CELLULAR TELEPHONE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method for predictive keyboard input for a cellular telephone subscriber, using an improved cellular telephone interface device.

SOLUTION: The interface device compares each of the subscriber's keystrokes (502) with a database dictionary tree of text entries, known to have high probability of being an input (508). The cellular telephone interface device selects the matching entry of highest probability, if there is any, from the database and displays the entry for the subscriber (510). The subscriber can choose the entry suggested by the cellular telephone interface device (514) or continue with character entry (512).
