PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep quantity of unburned HC discharged from a combustion chamber as small as possible and keep fuel economy as high as possible. SOLUTION: In the internal combustion engine provided with a fuel injection valve 11 injecting fuel to the intake passage 7, and an intake and exhaust valve open and close timing control device capable of changing timing of closing the exhaust valve and changing timing of opening the intake valve, the exhaust valve is closed at timing earlier than exhaust top dead center and the intake valve is opened at timing of exhaust top dead center or roughly exhaust top dead center when engine temperature is lower than second warming up completion temperature, and the exhaust valve is closed at timing earlier than exhaust top dead center and the intake valve is opened at timing later than exhaust top dead center when engine temperature is higher than the second warming up completion temperature and is lower than first warming up completion temperature.
