The chain tensioning device (10) has a pressure relief valve which is mounted in a valve mounting hole in a flange (12) on the device housing (11) and is configured to open if the pressure in a pressure chamber exceeds a predetermined value so as to communicate one end of the valve mounting hole with a pressure relief hole in the flange. The relief valve is fixed on the flange by a clamping screw being fitted from the outside circumference of the flange into the valve mounting hole to create with it a threaded connection.
