PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving method of a plasma display panel (PDP) capable of obtaining satisfactory image quality and a plasma display apparatus. SOLUTION: Display electrode pairs are divided to electrode groups A, B, and the writing periods of each subfield period are divided to sub-periods Ta, Tb to be allotted to electrode groups A, B. Scanning electrodes are sequentially selected so as to apply a first standby potential Vh to the sustain electrodes of the respective electrode groups A, B in the sub-periods Ta, Tb and to apply a selection potential Vb and a first non-selection potential Vs to the scanning electrodes. In synchronization with the selection of the scanning electrodes, a write potential Vw is applied to the data electrodes D1 to Dm1 ought to be selected. The time when the selection potential is applied to the scanning electrodes in one sub-period Ta excluding the last sub-period Tb among the plurality of the sub-periods Ta, Tb is set shorter than the time when the selection potential is applied to the scanning electrodes in the last sub-period Tb so that the second standby potential Vy lower than the first standby potential Vh is applied to the sustain electrode SUSb in the first sub-period Ta.
