PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active matrix liquid crystal display device to which a lateral electric field is applied, and on which no afterimage or image persistence is visually recognized, and a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is equipped with: an electrode substrate 1 having pixel electrodes and counter electrodes; a counter substrate 3 placed opposite to the electrode substrate 1; a sealing material 4 which is formed in a frame shape so as to surround a display region 2 and which makes the electrode substrate 1 and the counter substrate 3 stick to each other; and a liquid crystal 9 disposed in a space formed with the electrode substrate 1, the counter substrate 3, and the sealing material 4, and has an overcoat film 8 which is formed on a surface of the liquid crystal side of the counter substrate 3 and disposed on the display region 2, wherein an edge portion of the overcoat film 8 is located on the more inner side than the outer end of the sealing material 4.
