PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve gear for an internal combustion engine capable of varying the valve characteristics of an engine valve by using a motor without complicating the structure of a device. SOLUTION: A control shaft 16 used for changing maximum lift and an operating angle is rotatively driven around an axis by the motor. Also, an engagement member 61 engaging the control shaft 16 with a slider 26 is fitted into the groove 64 of the slider 26 and engaged with a male screw 32 provided on the peripheral surface of the shaft 16. In this case, the rotation drive of the control shaft 16 for changing the maximum lift and operating angle can be materialized by only transmitting the rotational motion of the motor directly to the control shaft 16 by a gear or the like, and it is not necessary to provide a rotation linear motion conversion mechanism for converting the rotation of the motor into the linear motion in the axial direction of the control shaft 16.
