<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal-containing squarylium compound, which has high light absorption characteristics in the wavelength range of 300-450 nm record-reproducible with a blue semiconductor laser and, at the same time, is excellent in a thermal decomposition behavior and a solubility in solvent and in light resistance and durability, and an optical recording medium using the same. <P>SOLUTION: This metal-containing squarylium compound comprises a squarylium compound represented by general formula (A) and a metal salt or a metal ion.
