PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter capable of comfortably starting an engine, by reducing generation of an abnormal sound, when starting the engine. SOLUTION: This starter 1 rotates an output rotary shaft 3 of an electric motor 2 in the R1 direction by operation of a starting switch, and rotates a pinion gear 4 in the R1 direction by transmitting rotation in the R1 direction of the output rotary shaft 3 of the electric motor 2 to the pinion gear 4 via a transmission mechanism 5, and moves the pinion gear 4 rotating in the R1 direction in the B direction by an electromagnetic switch, and rotated a ring gear 6 by meshing with the ring gear 6 of a vehicle engine, and starts the engine by rotation of the ring gear 6, and also releases meshing of the pinion gear 4 and the ring gear 6, by moving the pinion gear 4 in the C direction by a coil spring, simultaneously when releasing the electromagnetic switch, after starting the engine.
