A device and a method for displaying an icon in a portable terminal are provided to enable a user to easily recognize and use a function of buttons by displaying the icon information corresponding to the function assigned to each button according to a mode selected by the user. A keypad(110) is implemented by a plurality of buttons and displays different icon information to each button according to a received icon signal. A storing part(130) stores the icon information according to the function of each button assigned by a plurality of modes. A central controller(140) displays the icon information of each button through the keypad according to the selected mode and processes the function corresponding to a key signal received from the keypad by button selection of the user. The central controller includes a mode processor(150) setting the mode selected by the user through the keypad and an icon processor(160) displaying the icon information through each button of the keypad by checking the icon information of each button from the storing part according to the set mode.
