Calcium salts coated by a film of protein are obtained by mixing a solution of protein or of a protein-containing material with a finely-divided calcium salt that has been thoroughly washed with water and spray-drying the mixture obtained. The calcium salt, e.g. calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate or calcium gluconate, may be obtained by milling a relatively coarser calcium salt in a colloid mill under wet conditions or by precipitation from the reaction between two water-soluble salts, one of which is a calcium salt, such as sodium phosphate and calcium chloride Specified proteins and protein-containing materials are milk casein, soybean casein, egg white, gelatine, skim milk and skim dry milk. According to an example, calcium carbonate powder is milled with water in a colloid mill to produce 100 kg. of fine particles containing about 50% water. To this is added a solution of 4 Kg. of skim dry milk in 25 kg. of water, the liquids are mixed together with agitation and then spray-dried. Sweetening or flavouring materials, additives or vitamins may be added to the spray-dried product; Vitamin D may be added as the powder obtained by spray-drying a solution of the vitamin in oil or fat, an emulsifier and casein, gelatine, starch, dried milk or gum.ALSO:Calcium salts coated by a film of protein are obtained by mixing a solution of protein or of a protein-containing material with a finely-divided clacium salt that has been thoroughly washed with water and spray-drying the mixture obtained.
