PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a server, a multi function peripheral and a user authentication method for authenticating a user from any server on a network even when no exclusive server for managing user information is present. SOLUTION: The server is provided with: a use history recording means for recording the use history of a user; a characteristics analyzing means for analyzing the characteristics of a user from the use history recorded in the use history storage means; a question preparation means for preparing a question to the user based on the analysis result of the characteristics analyzing means; a transmission part for transmitting a question prepared by the question preparation means; a reception part for receiving an answer to the question; an answer collation means for collating the answer; and an authentication means authenticating the user based on the result of collation from the answer collation means.
