A portable electronic device and a recording medium are provided to improve operability, reliability, and safety by enabling a user to easily input information about user authentication. A portable electronic device comprises a plurality of authentication information input units, an arrangement state detection unit, a memory unit, a selection unit, an authentication unit, and a control unit. The authentication information input units, installed at a plurality of housings, input authentication information. The arrangement state detection unit detects the arrangement states of the housings. The memory unit memorizes information to match a plurality of arrangement states, detected by the arrangement state detection unit, with one or many of the authentication information input units. The selection unit selects an authentication information input unit corresponding to an arrangement state detected by the arrangement state detection unit, based on the memory contents of the memory unit. The authentication unit executes user authentication, based on the authentication information the selected authentication information input unit inputs. In case authentication by the authentication unit is successful, the control unit enables the use of the portable electronic device.
