A seal between relatively movable members, such as between a piston 17 or piston-rod and a cylinder 16, Fig. 12, or between a rotating shaft and its housing, is formed by a resilient sealing member 30 which is mounted in a groove 31 in one of the members and urges a U-shaped boot-like member 31 against the other member, the member 30 in its free form, Fig. 10, being of trapezoidal cross-section with its non-parallel sides and the larger of its parallel sides concavely shaped and when installed in the groove 31, Fig. 12, substantially filling the space between the member 31 and the groove bottom with the larger of its parallel sides engaging the latter in a substantially flat manner and the shorter one co-operating with the member 31 between the legs 32b, 32c thereof. The members 30, 31 have an annular configuration arid are respectively made of rubber and P.T.F.E. In operation, Fig. 12, the members 30, 31 slide bodily together from one side to the other of the groove without rotation of the member 30 as fluid pressure is alternately applied in opposite axial directions. Specification 767,784 is referred to.
