Aqueous ammonia is contacted with a liquefied C3-C5 paraffin or olefin to extract contaminants comprising acetylenes, carbonyls and reaction products thereof. Butadiene is the preferred extractant. The weight ratio of ammoniacal solution to hydrocarbon may be from 1:1 to 1:4 and temperatures of 27 DEG -55 DEG C. may be used.ALSO:In the separation of acetylenes from a hydrocarbon mixture containing a diolefin, e.g. butadiene by contact with a cuprous ammonium salt solvent, the acetylenes are stripped from the solvent, washed with water to recover ammonia and the resultant aqueous ammonia is contacted with a liquified C3-C5 olefinic or paraffinic hydrocarbon to extract contaminants, such as acetylenes, carbonyls and reaction products thereof before stripping the ammonia from the water. The light hydrocarbon may particularly be butadiene. The ratio of ammoniacal wash water to hydrocarbon may be from 1 : 1 to 1 : 4 by weight at 27 DEG C.-55 DEG C.
