The device has an exhaust gas recycling line (9) connected to an exhaust gas system (4) of an internal combustion engine (1) of a vehicle at an inlet side and connected at a fresh gas system (3) of the engine at an outlet side. An exhaust gas recycling valve (12) arranged in the line adjusts an exhaust gas recycling rate by changing a flowing cross section of the line. The valve is designed such that it adjusts the rate in a preset operating condition of the device and is enlarged and/or opened and closed at a preset or adjusted shifting time point of the cross section of the line. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an exhaust gas recycling device for an internal combustion engine in a motor vehicle.
