An hydraulic turbine comprises a casing having an inlet passage and an outlet passage, fluid directing means in the casing for discharging hydraulic fluid from the inlet passage substantially tangentially into an imobstructed vortex chamber for free vortical flow therein and a rotor in the chamber of small diameter compared therewith and having vanes providing an exit adjacent the outlet passage, the arrangement being such that, during operation, the entry edges of the blades are exposed to a greater velocity of flow of hydraulic fluid than the velocity of flow adjacent the directing means. An hydraulic turbine, Fig. 6, comprises a casing 20 having a body member 22 and a base plate 18 between which are formed one inlet volute chamber 22 and a volute chamber 44. The body member 22 also contains an inlet passage 26 and an exhaust passage 24. A distributer ring 34, located by a pin 36, is rigidly mounted in grooves formed in the body 22 and base plate 18. A throttle ring 40, having passages 42 which match corresponding passages 38 in the ring 34, is rotatably mounted in the same grooves. The rotor, Fig. 8, includes a body 62 with a central bullet-shaped projection 70 and an exit shroud 78 both of which are formed with radial slots to receive turbine vanes 72. A speed regulator 82, which controls the throttle ring 40, comprises a differential area servo-piston 90, Fig. 5, connected by a bellcrank 98 to the throttle ring. A pilot valve 102, slidably mounted in piston 90, is connected to a flexible diaphragm 116. The diaphragm 116 is loaded on one side by a spring 124 and atmospheric pressure and on the other from a pressure from a Pitot tube 128 measuring the residual swirl in the exhaust passage. Changes in load will vary the amount of swirl and which will in turn cause the diaphragm 116 to alter the position of the throttle ring 40.</p> |
