Compounds which may be used as bleachactivating agents are prepared by reacting pyridine or an alkyl-substituted pyridine with a stoichiometric excess of concentrated nitric acid.ALSO:Cloth is bleached by impregnating it with an acid solution comprising a bleaching agent which will release chlorine in acid solution together with the reaction product of pyridine or an alkyl-substituted pyridine and a stoichiometric excess of concentrated nitric acid. The pyridine product may be employed in a concentration of 1.5-8.5 gms/litre and may be prepared before adding to the bleach bath or prepared in situ. In the examples Egyptian cotton and linen are bleached in a bath containing sodium chlorite and the product of pyridine and nitric acid.
