Peracetic acid is produced from acetaldehyde by feeding gaseous acetaldehyde and oxygen in a molar ratio of at least 8:1 to a first reactor where some of the acetaldehyde is oxidised to peracetic acid in the gaseous phase and passing the resulting gaseous reaction mixture successively to at least one further reactor to which a further supply of fresh oxygen is fed, so that further oxidation of acetaldehyde to peracetic acid takes place, also in the gaseous phase, all said reactors incorporating efficient stirrers so as to create vigorous mixing throughout the whole volume of each reactor, the reaction contact time, as defined in the specification, being less than 60 seconds. The reactor is preferably made of aluminium, the reaction temperature in which case is from 150 DEG C. to 160 DEG C. Acetic acid is formed as a by-product of the reaction. Specification 547,333 is referred to.
|
