A control device (CD) (14) uses a final control element (16) to exert controlling torque (M A) on a vehicle's steering (18) so as to keep the vehicle in a traffic lane. A device (20) recognizes a driver's intention to change lanes. When intention to change lanes is recognized, the CD modifies controlling torque exerted on the steering in the direction of an easier lane change.
