In the dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons in a plurality of reactors of fixed-bed catalyst employing cyclic regeneration in which air is supplied to a plurality of the reactors simultaneously which air is subject to temperature stratification, fuel is added to the air passed to those reactors receiving cooler portions of air, the amount of fuel being controlled in accordance with the temperature of the catalyst to maintain the temperature at the desired level. The fuel may be a refinery or natural gas added in amounts below the lower flammability limit, preferably below 1% by volume of the air, so that combustion occurs on the catalyst. The conversion of butane to butadiene is referred to. |
