摘要 A device provided to act as an electromagnetic radiation decoupler such that it can be use to decouple an electronic device, e.g. a radio frequency identification tag, from a nearby surface, e.g. metallic conducting surface. In one arrangement, the device comprises a conducting base portion 8 connected to a first conducting side wall 2 and a second conducting side wall 4, where the first 2 and second 4 conducting side walls are spaced apart and substantially parallel. This device forms a cavity structure. In a second arrangement, the device comprises a first conducting side wall connected to a conducting end portion and has means to space the first conducting side wall from a conducting surface such that the conducting end portion makes contact with the conducting surface, where the device is used to decouple an electronic device from the conducting surface. In both arrangements, the upper and lower conducting layers, closed at one end by a conducting base portion, form a resonant dielectric cavity. The conducting base portion 2 may be curved and various different cavity arrangements are possible. Preferably, the length of the first side wall from the conducting end portion is arranged such that incident radiation at the frequency of interest couples into the cavity and is resonantly enhanced at the edge of the first side wall/ open end of the cavity (e.g. via a quarter wavelength dimension). An electronic device or tag placed in this region experiences high electric field strength on account of this enhancement and is thus coupled to the radiation and decoupled from the nearby conducting layer.
