The device (1) is assembled of a movable jaw (13) attached to the outer end (14) of a bar (3) and a stationary jaw (11) designed as a housing (5, 7) and provided with a stationary (17) and a movable handle (71). The movable jaw (13) can be attached to the opposite end (16) of the bar (3) when the tool (1) is used for spreading. The movable handle (71) acts on a ratchet mechanism (19) supported by a pressure spring (77) and facilitating small steps of adjustment. The locking unit is designed as a drive wheel (25) with a friction surface and a wound up spring (23).
