An apparatus and a method for controlling a graphic user interface used to control a camera are provided to set a region and to determine the target object through an instantaneous screen operation when a target object is found, and to reset a region and to manipulate the button at a speed similar to the speed of the moving target object to determine the target object. An apparatus for controlling a UI includes an interface part(200) and a GUI controller(300). The interface part includes a display part for displaying an image photographed by a camera and a variety of functional buttons used to allow a user to control a camera control system. The GUI controller includes an image processing module for receiving and processing an image signal from the camera control system to provide the image signal to the display part. The GUI controller performs a function selected by the functional button to generate a control signal, and transmits the control signal to a controller of the camera control system. The functional buttons includes a camera ID input button, a manual control button for panning, tilting, and zooming, and a preset functional button for previously storing a plurality of set areas. The apparatus for controlling the UI includes a pointing device operation display part for displaying a predetermined area if a pointing device selects the area as a display area.
