An anaerobic treatment apparatus comprising side walls partitioning a space for accommodating anaerobic sludge; an upflow zone provided to cause wastewater to flow upward through the anaerobic sludge to thereby effect anaerobic treatment thereof; a wastewater introduction part for introducing wastewater in the upflow zone; a solid/liquid separation zone for separating solid matter from a treated water having been treated in the upflow zone and having overflown an upper end of the upflow zone; and a fluid circulation path connecting the solid/liquid separation zone with the upflow zone so that any solid matter having been separated in the solid/liquid separation zone is guided downward.
