A light source for a backlight and a backlight unit having the same are provided to eliminate impurities generated in a lamp and to control mercury in the lamp by using an impurity absorbing layer. A light source for backlight includes a discharging space and an electrode(160) for applying a voltage to the discharging space. An impurity absorbing layer(190) is coated on an inner of the discharging space. The impurity absorbing layer is one selected from a group consisting of cliinoptilolite, modenite, heulandite, ferrierite, and erionite as natural zeolite, and A-type, X-type, Y-type, high silica-type, ZSM-5, and AIPO4-5 as zeolite. The impurity absorbing layer has a thickness of 1 to 100 mum. The impurity absorbing layer has a particle size of 0.1 to 10 mum. A fluorescent layer is coated on the discharging space and the impurity absorbing layer is formed on the fluorescent layer.
