902,405. Doors for passenger vehicles. LOVELAND, L. T. Aug. 11, 1958 [May 13, 1957], No. 15071/57. Class 103(2). Vehicle doors 1, 2, Figs. 1 and 3, are hingedly connected by pivots 6, 10 to hinge arms 4, 8 pivotally connected by pivots 5, 9 with the vehicle body 3, the arms together with the doors and the body forming parallelogram linkages and wherein the arms, as shown in Fig. 3, are never aligned. The pivots 5, 6, 9 and 10, as shown in Fig 2, are inclined to the vertical but lie in vertical planes perpendicular to the side of the vehicle body. With this arrangement the doors lift as they are opened and then fall again and are urged either to the open or closed positions by gravity. The doors 1, 2 are each provided with a recess 7 adjacent the arm 4 to prevent fingers becoming jammed between the arm and the door. The front door I has an arm rest 11 serving as a stop when the door is fully open. Similarly the rear door 2 has its opening movement limited by an arm rest stop 12 carried by the associated arm 4. Latch mechanism 13 controlled by inner and outer handles 14 is provided on each door. If desired a further arm 15 may assist the main arm 4 and the secondary arm 8 may be assisted by a corresponding arm at the top of the door. In a modification the secondary arm is provided on the outside of the door as described with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown).
