<p>The water vapor plasma burner for cutting a workpiece, comprises a feed line (8) for a liquid, a heating device (22), an evaporator (23) for forming a gas from the liquid, a cathode (24) detachably connected to a movably mounted piston rod, and a nozzle (26) with an outlet opening for the gas. A rod-shaped temperature sensor is connected to a control device, so that the recorded temperature values can be used as a basis for ascertaining wear of the cathode and the nozzle and so that the control of a water vapor plasma cutting process can be influenced. The water vapor plasma burner for cutting a workpiece, comprises a feed line (8) for a liquid, a heating device (22), an evaporator (23) for forming a gas from the liquid, a cathode (24) detachably connected to a movably mounted piston rod, and a nozzle (26) with an outlet opening for the gas. A rod-shaped temperature sensor is connected to a control device, so that the recorded temperature values can be used as a basis for ascertaining wear of the cathode and the nozzle and so that the control of a water vapor plasma cutting process can be influenced. The temperature sensor is formed through a positive temperature coefficient-resistance or a negative temperature coefficient-resistance and a thermocouple. A recess for the temperature sensor is intended in the piston rod. The temperature sensor is arranged parallel to the longitudinal axis of the piston rod in the boundary region of the piston rod, is provided with connections and is clamped into the recess, which is formed corresponding to the temperature sensor. The piston rod has a passage for the connections of the temperature sensor. The connections are connected with the control device. A bolt is arranged at cathode contact surface, which is turned to the workpiece. The temperature sensor and/or control device is connected with a display for the representation of the wear of the cathode and nozzle.
