A lubricating oil comprises a hydrocarbon oil containing minor proportions of (a) an oil-soluble copolymer of (1) a vinyl pyridine and (2) a mixture of at least one ester of an acrylic acid and a long-chain aliphatic alcohol containing at least 10 carbon atoms and at least one ester of an acrylic acid and a lower aliphatic alcohol containing not more than six carbon atoms, the vinyl pyridine and the ester mixture being in a mole ratio of from 2:1 to 1:10, and (b) a p,p1-methylene bisphenol or the monoether derivative thereof, having two tertiary alkyl groups attached to each aromatic ring. The base oil is preferably paraffinic or naphthenic, but may contain aromatics, synthetic oils such as polyisobutylene, and fatty oils such as castor oil or lard oil. Many examples of suitable components for the polymer are given. The composition may also include organic phosphates, thiophosphates, phosphites, thiophosphites and phosphonates, halogenated compounds and P2S5-terpene reaction products and salts thereof. |
