A typical coating machine has a rotating drum (1) with a perforated surface (6), dipping into a bath (12) of coating fluid (10). The fluid flows through the perforations (30) into the interior of the drum. A fluid film is formed inside (38) and outside (18) the drum. Films are lifted out of the bath. The outer portion of the outside film may drain back into the bath. The outer film is carried round until it approaches (24) the downwardly moving fabric strip (14). In the contact region (16) it adheres to the strip (22) and is carried away downward.
