A character input apparatus and method of a mobile terminal are provided to reduce the size of a mobile terminal, support various designs by using a small touch pad as an input unit and extend the size of LCD display. A controller checks whether a mobile terminal is in a character input mode(301). When the mobile terminal is in the character input mode, the controller displays a window for inputting characters(303). The controller checks whether the user's finger is touched by analyzing a sense signal from a touch pad(305). When the user's finger's touch is sensed, the controller detects a touch form by analyzing the sense signal(307). The controller checks whether the touch form indicates conversion of the input mode(309). When the touch form does not indicate conversion of the input mode, the controller accesses a character mapping table to discriminate inputted characters according to the touch form(311). The controller inputs the discriminated characters(313).
