PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of restraining image quality defects such as transfer void, transfer dust, and so on by restraining discharge that arises in an empty space in the entrance of a nip area, and capable of restraining a cost increase by eliminating the need for a complex mechanism and additional members. SOLUTION: On the inner periphery of a beltlike image carrier 100, a counter roller 103 is disposed to press the beltlike image carrier 100 to a transfer belt 101. On the inner periphery of the transfer belt 101, a transfer roller 102 is disposed so as to press the transfer belt 101 to the beltlike image carrier 100. In the area of contact between the beltlike image carrier 100 and transfer belt 101, a transfer electric field is generated, thus, a toner image formed on the beltlike image carrier 100 is transferred to a transfer material 104 conveyed by the transfer belt 101. In the image forming apparatus having the foregoing configuration, the transfer roller 102 is disposed upstream of the counter roller 103 in the moving direction of the beltlike image carrier 100.
